Charity In The Time Of Coronavirus

By Mikael Bingham

When I first started planning what to write for this, our first blog post, you better believe I had something else in mind. I planned to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter, thank our supporters and subtly brag about our unparalleled skills. I planned for verbal confetti. But you know what they say about the best laid plans. They go awry. Often.

I’m lucky. COVID-19 threw a spanner in my works. It has inconvenienced me both personally and professionally but it hasn’t wreaked havoc on my life. No one from the Cadence team has lost a loved one. Our jobs are secure and our homes are comfortable. So what can we say here? How can we tell you about our new business venture in a way that acknowledges that this is a rough time for businesses? That this is, indeed, a rough time for humanity? I am, admittedly, out of my depth.

So before writing this, I messaged my very wise friend Jess Martin-Dueck of The Lorist, asking for advice on how to blog about a business launch during a time of international crisis. She was calm and reassuring and wry – as she always is – and she advised me to be forthright about the practical support we can provide charities, nonprofits and other benevolent sector actors right now.

Knowing that the COVID-19 outbreak will cause financial and administrative complications for many charities and nonprofits, Cadence is monitoring the evolution of Canada’s economic response plan. We’re keeping our clients informed on changes to filing deadlines and working with individuals and organizations to come up with plans that serve their needs. And, as per usual, we’re drafting minutes, preparing financial statements, filing annual reports and submitting charity applications. We’re doing all the things we’d normally do and then some. Like so many of you, we’re doing what we can.

Our business at Cadence is good deeds. Our clients are motivated by a desire to positively impact the world. And, though what we’re collectively going through right now is unprecedented in our experience, we are grateful to support the good work of so many amazing people and organizations.

If you’re a charity, nonprofit or donor affected by COVID-19, please reach out. If you need help navigating the daily updates to government economic relief programs, if you need someone to take over your corporate maintenance so you can focus on delivering services, if you’ve made the difficult decision to wrap-up operations, if you want to give but don’t know where to start or if you just have questions you need answered, we’d like to help. And, if we can’t help, we’ll do our best to put you in touch with someone that can.
