EPP Canada are on a mission to understand why we do what we do, using the Enneagram to inspire transformation on both sides of the bars through self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-compassion; we do the work together.
EPP Canada was formed to provide life skills and rehabilitative training to people who are incarcerated, formerly incarcerated or at risk of incarceration and their families, and to staff involved in the Canadian correctional system, to help them understand why they do what they do – to promote their safety, improve their lives and reduce recidivism.
The Enneagram Prison Project is a well-established American charity, offering educational and life skills programs and activities for incarcerated individuals, their families and others. When they approached Cadence to support their incorporation and charitable registration in Canada, our biggest challenge was to clearly define their work in terms that fit into CRA’s policies on charitable activities. And to do this in a way that would establish a clear distinction between their international entities and the Canadian organization, while de-mystifying the Enneagram for Charities Directorate.
While the Enneagram is well known in certain circles, it’s certainly not on the tip of everyone’s tongue quite yet. Our solution was to clearly outline the ways in which this organisation intended to use the Enneagram as an educational tool for those they serve. During the process of incorporating EPP-C and getting them registered as a charity, Cadence worked to ensure that the Canadian branch of this charity remained meaningfully connected to its international branches, while also meeting the CRA’s requirements for direction and control over its own resources. In spite of the challenges that arose, Cadence was able to develop the nuanced language to both represent their core constituency AND meet the needs of the CRA’s somewhat limiting policy on drafting charitable purposes.
In just under 9 months, we helped the Enneagram Prison Project Foundation Canada achieve incorporation and registered charitable status. Just in time for a critical fundraising event, which allowed them to offer much-needed tax receipts for gifts received!
